The Sense of an Ending: A Review

A nobel prize winner and winner in my mind, The Sense of an Ending, certainly deserves all of its praise. This book is a quick read and one that, in spite of its philosophical nature, keeps you on your toes. It’s a different kind of “thriller,” but it still possesses nearly all of the same characteristics that a thriller might. Still yet, it maintains its sense of tranquility and peace.

Julian Barnes captures what it is to be human in such a beautiful and eloquent way. The Sense of an Ending makes you think about the past, present, and future in a way that you’ve always known to be true, but are now able to see clearly.

Although Julian’s truistic tone will at times sadden the reader, this novel is, nonetheless, an uplifting and realistic read of the human life.

A Game of Shadows

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows tops the last 2009 Sherlock Holmes movie. For some reason the 2011 movie was given horrible reviews, without much reason. I assure you, though, this movie deserves much more credit than its reviewers have given it.

Of course, Robert Downey Jr. (Sherlock Holmes) and Jude Law (Dr. John Watson) had riveting performances, but the true gem of this movie was Jared Harris, who starred as Professor James Moriarty. Jared Harris played the perfect arch-nemesis, mastering every evil expression. In case you’re interested, he’s also starred in two hit TV series, Fringe and Mad Men.

Favorite parts of the movie:

Although Sherlock already revealed a part of his thinking process in the boxing scene in the first movie, he reveals it more in the second. Listening to the planning of his next moves and later seeing the execution of them is something I find very interesting.

Slow-motion scenes: these remind me of The Social Network row race where slow motion is experienced completely differently.

All in all, I’d definitely recommend seeing this film!

I’ve always been one for making important to-do lists for the New Year. Completed or not, they somehow allow me to feel more empowered. Internal locus of control is important, and so I continue to complete these lists every year. For 2012, I’m going to aim high.

Bucket list for 2012:

1. No soda (pop or sodi pop).

2. No candy.

3. Get Rosetta Stone and learn Italian or French.

4. Do more in the day= be efficient.

5. Read a book a week.

6. Keep up with this blog!
