A Game of Shadows

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows tops the last 2009 Sherlock Holmes movie. For some reason the 2011 movie was given horrible reviews, without much reason. I assure you, though, this movie deserves much more credit than its reviewers have given it.

Of course, Robert Downey Jr. (Sherlock Holmes) and Jude Law (Dr. John Watson) had riveting performances, but the true gem of this movie was Jared Harris, who starred as Professor James Moriarty. Jared Harris played the perfect arch-nemesis, mastering every evil expression. In case you’re interested, he’s also starred in two hit TV series, Fringe and Mad Men.

Favorite parts of the movie:

Although Sherlock already revealed a part of his thinking process in the boxing scene in the first movie, he reveals it more in the second. Listening to the planning of his next moves and later seeing the execution of them is something I find very interesting.

Slow-motion scenes: these remind me of The Social Network row race where slow motion is experienced completely differently.

All in all, I’d definitely recommend seeing this film!

  1. Although all of the freshness that was part of the first one is somewhat over-used, the flick is still a lot of fun with Downey Jr., Harris, and Law breathing life into each of their own characters. However, I was kind of disappointed by Noomi Rapace’s role as she just simply stands there and really doesn’t do anything. Regardless though, good review.

    • I would have to agree with you about Noomi Rapace. I was sad to see Rachel McAdams go in the first quarter of the second movie. After all, she was cast very well in the first. You’re right, though, McAdams’ replacement just sort of stood there. But I suppose nowadays every movie throws in a hot female lead to gain an audience, even if they aren’t very good. :)
